Communication & Collaboration in Early Childhood

Welcome to a new exciting blogging adventure!

For this first post I am supposed to write about a person I admire based on their communication skills.  I chose someone I truly admire for their communication skills my Nutrition Professors, Dr. Patricia Miner. She taught me a lot of what I know about counseling patients. When she talks with you, she engages you. She is receptive, attentive and genuine. She has been a nutritionist for many years, and she knows that health behavioral changes come from more than education. I always remember the tips she shared about body language, verbal and non-verbal communication and how important it is to make the other person feel heard.

Returning to school has been a new challenge for me. I am not the greatest written communicator. I find the message loses it's essence. I wish we had more than a smiley face to connote excitement :) or a sad face to state disappointment :( When will technology give us more than symbols >:S

Working through my second MS online has really pushed my capacity to communicate through written language. I am looking forward to learning more.

Message for the week:

Are you practicing your listening skills?

  1. Thank you for sharing the impact Dr.Miner has had on your life and your thoughts on communication. I believe the best communicators are those who listen and understand your view point. I hope through this course, communication because easier for you.

  2. Angie, I enjoyed reading about Dr. Miner. I think the fact that she is receptive to what other people are saying enhances her ability as a communicator. The ability to engage your audience is one of the signs of a good communicator. I'm certain that you have learned much through Dr. Miner. Thanks for sharing, Angie.

  3. I enjoyed reading about Dr. Miner, and the picture that you posted at the ending of your blog. It is so true that communication has two key parts: listening and talking. I should say I was not an effective communicator, and I hope I can be a better one after learning through the course. I hope I can communicate with children and their families in a better way to serve them better. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Hi Angela, I hope you made it through the hurricane ok.......
I did not know this was your second master’s degree, congratulations! That is great!
It is wonderful that you had a professor that made such a positive impact on you. I am sure she is a role model that you can look to as a guide as you move through your career. Glad to be in class with you again!

  5. Hello Angela,
I agree that working on a degree online has helped with my written communication. I look forward to the day technology does catch up with more symbols in order for us to express our emotions. It sounds like your nutrition professor also has a honest relationship with her students. I hope your family did not have a lot of damage from the storm. I live in Cambridge, MD and some people in our area did not have power for a day. I hope all is well in your area.
